Jeffrey Beckwith has smoked cigars and pipes for more than twenty years. He has also read nearly everything available on the subject, and attended numerous gatherings, get-togethers, smokers and conventions relating to cigars.

He comes by his interest naturally: his uncle worked for many years for the M&N Cigar Factory (J.C. Newman Co.) in Cleveland, Ohio. His father was also a life-long smoker and some of Jeffrey’s earliest memories are of the aroma of good cigars. His idea of a fun vacation is a trip to a tobacco farm in Central America, and he chooses cruises not by ports of call but by whether or not they have walk-in humidors onboard ship.

A native of Cleveland, Jeffrey attended Baldwin-Wallace College majoring in biology, chemistry and psychology. He later attended graduate school at the University of Michigan for doctoral studies in genetics. He has a special interest in the culture, genetics and hybridization of tobacco varieties and the history of cigar production. He also has an interest in the chemistry of tobacco essential oils and how they contribute to flavor and aroma in cigars, and is currently working on a book on that subject. Jeffrey is, however, a true amateur — he has never worked in the tobacco industry, nor does he receive any payment from tobacco related companies.

Jeffrey “works” with words. He is a full-time writer and has also hosted radio talk shows in the midwest and the south. In addition to this blog, he is exploring the possibility of adding podcasting to his “to do” list. Jeffrey is also a late-night internet junkie, a husband and father, and manages to juggle it all more or less successfully thanks in part to some well-stocked humidors. The opinions expressed in the articles in this blog are his own, uninfluenced by anything other than his love of cigars.
